Specifications
Needed to be a Queen sleeper. Bonus: sleeper technology that has innovated from the traditional pullout mechanism.
We wanted to upgrade to an L-shape sectional.
Has to fit in our second bedroom which is our living room. This meant something under 110".
Something that is worth our $$ and doesn’t feel cheaply made.
Context
For almost a year, I’ve known that I wanted a new couch that my boyfriend and I can really sprawl out on. Our current couch, an 80” Room and Board Easton sleeper, worked well for the space but as someone who thrives on optimization, I felt like there was something better out there for us. We are also constantly hosting guests and the process to get that room setup for someone to sleep in was non-trivial: move the bulky chairs and the heavy coffee table out, take the cushions off the bed, get the bedding ready, etc.
I made it my mission to find the “perfect” sleeper couch. One that didn’t break the bank and one that would solve all of our problems.
The Options
From cheapest to most expensive. Here’s what we debated heavily but ultimately didn’t go with.
Living Spaces | Sebastian Cream White Beige Fabric 111" 2 Piece Convertible Futon Sleeper Sectional with Right Arm Facing Storage Chaise
Ikea | FINNALA
Pottery Barn | Shasta Square Arm Trundle Chaise Sleeper Sectional - Storage Available (101")
Room and Board | Berin Day & Night Sleeper
Why we didn’t choose the Living Spaces couch?
This was a tough one to pass up. I had my sister living in Los Angeles check out this couch and her review was glowing. It was firm but would eventually soften up, the trundle bed moved smoothly enough and the overall the couch looked ‘expensive’. Also a trundle bed is a huge space saver!!
Cons: The biggest red flag was reading reviews about Living Spaces on Reddit. I kept seeing “cheap, cheap, cheap.” One small and super nit picky detail but our guests would sleep facing a wall and window instead of the TV that is directly in front of the couch.
Why we didn’t choose the Ikea couch?
Ikea is a hit or miss. This couch from Ikea seemed like a hit. It checked all of the boxes: queen size bed, removable couch cushions, and aesthetically pleasing. However, there was a bit of sticker shock. $2,000 was creeping up on the cost of the couches from West Elm, Pottery Barn, CB2. So we put this one on pause..
Cons: Ikea reviews weren’t glowing (on the website and TikTok) particularly with the couch pillows falling off.
Why we didn’t choose the Pottery Barn Couch?
I love this couch a lot. The price was right, the size was great, well-made. Unfortunately, we were not able to sit on the actual couch because it wasn’t in the PB show room in Manhattan.
Cons: This couch is contract-to-made which meant that it wouldn’t be ready for 6 months.
Why we didn’t choose the Room and Board couch?
This Room and Board couch is top of the line. It is manufactured by American Leather which is why the bed pulls out so smoothly. I was also able to sit on the couch and I was in awe of the comfortability.
Cons: The sticker price is $6,700 pre-tax!!
What we chose and why
Luonto Hampton Queen Size Sleeper
“Contemporary styling meets sleeper and available reversible storage chaise. Hampton can add functionality to your home in more ways than one.”
The specs speak for themselves. When I saw that this Luonto couch, an amazing Finnish brand that makes innovative sleeper sofas, go on sale for President’s Day weekend, I knew that I had to move quickly. I first discovered Luonto on TikTok looking at Rachel DiBease’s video showing off her Delta XL in her fabulous high ceiling apartment. The couch was impressive and was the star of the show in her European designed space. She also started the video saying, “I am going to show you our most used and favorite piece of furniture in our apartment.”
The perfect size couch in length 100” even better for our space than something 110”.
Reversible chaise to make a right and left L-shape.
Easy queen size pullout bed with memory foam (watch the video).
Performance fabric and foam cushions.
Storage inside the chaise.
We went to a local store in Brooklyn, NY called Futonland to sit on another Luonto model that they had in store. Unfortunately, we couldn’t sit on this model. The sofa was on the firmer side but we were assured that the foam will start to break in as we sit on it more. The couch comes in early March, and I’ll be sure to post an update and pictures of how we like it and styled the couch.
